UDZUNGWA MOUNTAINS

Udzungwa Mountains National Park is one of Tanzania’s most unique and biodiverse parks, famous for its rainforest-covered mountains, waterfalls, and rare primates.

🌍 Location & Size

• Situated in Iringa and Morogoro Regions, southern Tanzania.
• Covers about 1,990 km² (770 sq mi).
• Part of the Eastern Arc Mountains, a chain of ancient ranges known for high levels of endemism.

📜 History & Significance

• Established in 1992.
• The name “Udzungwa” comes from the Wadsungwa, a sub-tribe of the Hehe people who once lived on the mountain slopes.
• Unlike many Tanzanian parks, Udzungwa is not a traditional safari destination—it’s a hiking and trekking paradise.

🐒 Wildlife

• Known for rare primates, including the Sanje mangabey and the Iringa red colobus, species found only here.
• Other mammals include elephants, leopards, buffalo, and bushbucks.
• Birdlife is exceptional, with over 400 species, including several endemic to the Eastern Arc.
